Books - Books - Books and a few Cosplayers

It's this time of year again and I am not talking about Christmas, but in some cases it can also bring joy to the people. I am talking about the Book Fair Leipzig (Leipziger Buchmesse) which is finally back on track, meaning it's back in March instead of April (2023) or its little popup "brother" 2 years ago.

And for me Book Fair always means meeting an insanely huge ammount of Cosplayers. For many years it has been the season opener for the cosplay community, but it lost some of its relevance. It still might be the first big national event for cosplayers, but there are a few smaller yet earlier conventions, e.g. Dedeco in Dresden which can be considered as season openener together with MAG-C in Erfurt.

I am definitely looking forward to tomorrow when thousands of anime, manga and game lovers will dress up as their favorite heros. Especially the glass hall will be my main turf as usual, because the light is just so amazing, if the weather plays along, as it normally does.

I am already very excited and absolutely curious. I have already prepared all of my camera gear and am ready to go for a wild ride of 4 days full of cosplay and otaku related show acts or shopping booths, although those are less relevant for me - too expensive and always the same items that I would not get at any Hard Off yet I could get those for one third of the price.

Let's enjoy the Book Fair Leipzig from March 21st-24th.

EDIT: ...If you can, because the local streetcars and busses are on a strike on Thursday and Friday.

Book Fair 2019 is coming soon

Be prepared and pack your camera gear for the hundrets of Cosplayer on those 4 days in March from 21st until 24th.

Of course a Book fair is also about the latest books that you definitely should not miss, especially when you are planning on writing and publishng your own material just look for a matching publisher and get in contact with editors, otherwise the section for self-publishing might fit you, because it has never been easier to cast your own work into the world of readers.

If you are just into reading, can just explore all the halls and maybe you can get an autograph of a famous or your most beloved author him-/herself.

I will check the picturebook section like every year hoping to find the right motivation for my own work being able to choose from 40.000 pics about Japan, increasing my portfolio every year ;)

The Cosplayers that you are unable to miss not just in their "own area" Manga-Comic-Con will get most of my attention.

There are a few interesting booths (not the shops, it's way too expensive, import your stuff) for example NINTENDO presenting their latest Games as well as GamesRoom SVVAMP offering tournaments and a nice place to relax and experience some great multiplayer games.

Be prepared for some awesome work next week.

Just compare the amazing Cosplay work from DREAMHACK 2019

Just to tease you with some Cosplayers from 2018

Leipziger Buchmesse 2017 is near

It's Book Fair again, tomorrow the doors of the "Leipziger Buchmesse" will open as well as the Manga-Comic-Con.

So many things to see, new book releases, readings with authors, autograph sessions, Cosplayers, video games and so much more.

You can instantly feel the enormous atmosphere of everything that awaits you, it might start with someone dressed up as a disney character, going over to the volume of your favorite fantasy novel, followed by a beautiful picture about a place you ever dreamed of visiting or by trying out the new Nintendo Switch and ends with a Sheldon Cosplayer right after attending a reading of a new famous author.

Sheldon playing Monster Hunter on New Nintedo 3DS
There are so many reasons to come to Leipzig and vist the Book Fair Leipzig / Manga-Comic-Con.

I guess most of my attention will be caught by the numerous cosplayers just like any other year before.

See you tomorow

Book Fair Leipzig is coming soon, again

Only one week is left until the "halls of the books" will open again at Leipziger Buchmesse (Book Fair Leipzig) and MCC - Manga-Comic-Con.

Publishers and authors will use their chances to introduce their latest books to the audience. The booths always invite to read the new stuff they offer and very ofetn more than that - many publishers, especially the big ones have events like meet and greets, autograph sessions or a reading with their authors.

There's always something to find for everyone and not just the "traditional" books, because there's also the Manga-Comic-Con... where you can find Cars and Flowers - just joking - as you can imagine you can find many manga and comic related booths and many other that share the same topic, e.g. Cosplay. Cosplayers belong to that scene like BBQ sauce belongs to beef. Back in the days when manga where not as famous as they are now, you only had a few cosplayers in the halls and the acceptance by the other visiters was quite small. But now it's accepted (as long the cosplayers behave and don't creep around like weirdos - you always have some black sheep) and some people who never read a manga, comic or saw an anime ever before also come to see the colorful costumes, take pictures and value the effort of creating those armors and dresses.

Beside books, Manga and so you will also find a few video game publisher like Nintendo where you can try their latest games, especially their new console Nintendo Switch - I highly recommend trying it out - The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild is one of the best games of the last decade.

The Book Fair opens from March 23 - March 26 10:00-18:00 - only one week is left, I hope you will enjoy it.

[Whatever-Wednesday] What is COSPLAY

Greetings fellows.

Today's topic on Whatever-Wednesday is COSPLAY. I've mentioned it in several entries already and today I'll explain it, for those who have never heard of it before.

Cosplay is a mixture of costume and play, so these 2 words are also the center of "doing cosplay".
So you wear a costume of the characterof your choice and then you play / act / behave yourself like this character used to be in some kind.

In my opinion some go a bit too far - if the char is not talking the cosplayer are not doing either (e.g. Mana from Malice Mizer), or when the character is "creeping around" and touching everything with 2 finger (L from Death Note)

There are also very many shops that specialized on cosplay, e.g. in Akiba or Ikebukuro, especially the wigs and the other props are a paradise for Cosplayers

At Tokyo Game Show and other events you can see many cosplayers, here are some examples

And here's just a small collection of German Cosplayers at several events

But normally the Cosplayer pick someone the like or love from their favorite anime, manga, game, comic, etc. to impersonate those on their own, sometimes because the person is just cool or because they like several characteristics the Cosplayers would like to have, too.

There are also many competitions, some are even nationwide or international (DCM in Germany or WCS worldwide with its final in Japan (Nagoya).

Those who are participating in the big contests use many weeks or even months to craft or sew their perfect costume, trying to even match the material or at least make it look in the original artwort / concept sketch - for armory KobraCast or Worblas Finest Art are used a lot (Cast4Art - links in my Link section)

It's hard to define the origin of cosplay, there is no real patient ZERO for this and it's no zombie like crisis... - some people even might consider KISS as Cosplayers although I would define their masks / characters more Kabuki-like than cosplay-like, but from some point of view it may be plausible.

The Cosplay phenomen has its roots in Japan at least the word itself, that's also why most characters are chosen from manga / Anime / Games, although dressing up in a costume is not invented by Japan, carneval or halloween is celebrated throughout the world, so what's the difference, well, cosplay doesn't need a purpose like those mentioned, in Tokyo, especially at the bridge of Harajuku's JR-station Cosplayers meet almost every Sunday - in other countries they normally dress up for conventions, although photo shootings outside of the cosplay "season" are getting more and more popular and are not common anymore.

That's it for today's topic, it might be only a rough summary, but I hope you got a clue about it now.
